The Snell Memorial foundation was named after William “Peter” Snell. He died in a auto racing event in 1956 when his helmet failed to protect him. His friends, colleagues and fellow racers formed the Snell Memorial foundation in 1957, a nonprofit organization. The goals of the foundation, is to try to improve helmet design and capabilities, and to encourage the development and use of protective helmets.
Snell requirements are among the most stringent in the world - much more stringent than the US Department of Transportation (DOT).
To receive Snell certification, SNELL M2000 - 2000 Standards for Motorcycle Protective Headgear the path helmet manufacturer must first submitted 5-6 helmets to SNELL for testing. This number can vary depending on the helmet type and Snell Standard.
- The test consists of four major elements:
- Impact management - How well that helmet protects against collisions with other large objects.
- Helmet positional stability - Whether the helmet will be in place, on the head when it is needed.
- Retention system strength - Whether the chin straps are sufficiently strong to hold the, throughout a head impact?

If all helmets pass the testing, the manufactures is free to purchase the SNELL sticker for that helmet model only.
In order to maintain the high quality of the helmets being sold to the public, Snell purchases and test samples of currently certified helmets from the marketplace. These helmets are tested only in Snell labs by Scott technicians. If a currently certified helmet fails the helmet manufacturer must correct the problem to keep the Snell certification.
I will not wear a helmet that does not meet the Snell certification.
